Director of Counseling

The TEAK Fellowship is a ten-year enrichment program that offers New York City students from under-resourced communities intensive after-school and summer academic classes, transformational cultural experiences, secondary school, and college guidance, a vibrant internship program, and robust support system. TEAK students earn admission/financial aid at our Nation’s most prestigious academic institutions and graduate from them determined to make an impact on communities in need of their contributions and leadership.  

TEAK is seeking a Director of Counseling who will be a member of the Student Support team and report to the Executive Director. The Director of Counseling will lead the incorporation of social-emotional learning into TEAK’s programming model which provides academic support and enrichment to high-achieving students. Candidates should have a passion for educational equity, a love of working with exceptional young people, and a desire to join a like-minded, committed, and diverse team of educators.

Key Responsibilities

Mental Health & Social-Emotional Support

• Manage TEAK’s mental health services for all middle school through college level Fellows
• Support student mental health through short-term individual, group, and family counseling as needed
• Provide consultation/coaching for Deans and parents related to mental health and wellness
• Develop educational programs for families and Fellows to promote mindfulness and improved mental health
• In partnership with TEAK’s student support team, create a cohesive, culturally-responsive multi-year curriculum that promotes social-emotional fitness
• Conduct periodic visits with Fellows at TEAK off-sites in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens
• Build a network of community partnerships to meet the mental health needs of TEAK families and students
• Collaborate with the Director of Student Growth in the development of staff training and the definition of student intervention strategies for students requiring significant mental health and social-emotional support

College Success Program Management & Advising

• Provide individual academic and social-emotional advising for a caseload of college Fellows
• Actively use TEAK’s student relationship management system to maintain up-to-date records of student meetings, and provide periodic snapshots of students’ progress
• Support Fellows and their families in navigating the financial aid reapplication process
• Serve as a member of the College Success team, assisting planning of TEAK’s College Transition Workshops, class meetings, parent meetings, and the College Graduation Celebration

Leadership Development

• Identify opportunities for leadership development, character building, and service learning for middle school, high school, and college students
• Design a clearly articulated leadership development program and processes for assessing the output of the program
• Lead professional development workshops on youth development best practices and connect with other practitioners for continued learning and partnership

Programming

• Serve as a member of the Summer Institute leadership team
• Support family and student events in planning and/or advisory roles on an as-needed basis
• Participate in or lead special projects and committees

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree is required, and an advanced degree in psychology, social work, school counseling, or related degree
• Appropriate licensure or certification for counseling work
• 3+ years of professional experience in student counseling and support services
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusions and TEAK’s mission of educational access and success for underrepresented students
• Experienced user of student information management systems (Salesforce is a plus) and proficiency in managing data
• Fluency in Spanish or Bengali is a plus
• Strong administrative and organizational skills
• Exceptional public speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to travel within New York City and to select colleges campuses throughout the nation
