Meditations with Rachel Josephs

This summer, TEAK hosted a virtual weekly yoga series for Fellows and alumni taught by a former TEAK staff member, Rachel Josephs. The series focused on the essential poses of Ashtanga Yoga and the one meditation to master.   Rachel was an early employee of TEAK, from 2002 to 2016, and was happy to spend her summer teaching the yoga and mediation class. “It was really nice to reconnect with old faces and meet new friends, especially in this super challenging global time.”   While the yoga sessions have come to an end, Rachel agreed to leave us with

Apollo Rising Entrepreneurs

Twenty students in Class 17 (rising college first-years) participated in a 5-week entrepreneurship project hosted by Apollo Global Management. The project prompt asked the students (broken into 5 teams and paired with four volunteer Apollo coaches) to develop a pivot idea for an existing Apollo portfolio business in response to COVID-19. With support from their team volunteers, the students devised light business plans, which focused on developing a new idea to bring business value and social impact on their assigned company. Five judges, all A-Level Apollo executives, judged the presentations and selected the winning team.   They were immensely

Introduction to Civics and Nonprofit Management

By Christine Harding, Assistant Director of College Success   This summer, Class 19 Fellows were engaged in a six-week course where they learned about four issue areas exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis in NYC: education, prison reform, healthcare, and food security. The final presentations featured four nonprofit proposals crafted by students, addressing the four issues addressed in class. Student presentations reflected a genuine understanding of the interconnectedness of societal issues and nonprofit elements, as well as the power of nonprofits in serving as effective levers of change.   Presentations were evaluated by Olivia Nunez (Chief Program Officer,

An Update for our TEAK Community – 6/1/20

Dear Friend,    While I have written to you about the profound impact of COVID-19 on TEAK and, more specifically, the disproportionate impact COVID-19 is having on the physical/emotional health of people of color and the economic losses sustained by those who live in under-resourced communities, I find myself compelled to write yet again.   On behalf of the TEAK Fellowship, I write this time to express my concern particularly for our Fellows, as they try to survive the painful fact that George Floyd was killed earlier this week (and Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor earlier this

Heroes & Helpers

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are inspired by TEAK alumni who work tirelessly on the frontlines keeping our communities safe and resilient. Every day they show up to treat patients, organize communities, teach students remotely, and more. Today we’re shining a spotlight on our alumni who provide healthcare under our current challenging circumstances.    “The reality is as horrifying as you’re reading about in the media and hearing about in the news. We are continuously adjusting the bed capacity of our hospital as the numbers grow by quickly discharging patients and repurposing other areas for
