ANNE BRENNAN

Since 2007, Board Co-Chair 2013-16

How many years did you serve on the TEAK board?
12 years. I joined the board when our current high school seniors were finishing kindergarten!

What attracted you to TEAK?
The energy and passion of our founder, Justine, coupled with the extraordinary potential of the Fellows.

Name one of your favorite highlights?
When Angelica Cesario, TEAK Class 1, joined the Board. There is no better evidence that TEAK has created a virtuous circle.

What’s one piece of advice you would share with Fellows?
Never stop looking for new adventures!

What attracted you to TEAK?
I met Justine Stamen Arrillaga when I was heading a girls’ school in California where Justine’s sister-in-law is an alumna and was a trustee. Justine founded TEAK while living in NYC and raved about its impact and every person involved with it. When I moved to NYC, TEAK was on the top of my ‘to get to know and get involved’ list.

Name one of your favorite highlights?
Ah, there are so many, but the one with the biggest impact on TEAK Fellows, the TEAK organization and program, and TEAK’s future is the hiring of John Green as Executive Director. John is an extraordinary visionary, leader, and champion for TEAK.

What’s one piece of advice you would share with Fellows?
Live Michele Obama’s advice:

When you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. You reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.

How did your experience as a former Fellow impact your decisions as a board member?
Having the fortune of understanding the Fellow experience allowed me to anticipate obstacles to programmatic changes, communicate the Fellow perspective former board members, share the alumni experience, bring a new perspective to fundraising, and so much more!

Name one of your favorite highlights?
Joining my first Senior Send-Off and standing on stage as a board member was definitely one of the highlights. What a thrill it was to come full circle. I was also so happy to be a member during TEAK’s growth transition – such an important part of TEAK history – and was proud to spearhead a new TEAK Alumni Association. The whole experience was truly just an honor.

What’s one piece of advice you would share with our Fellows?
Dream big – you never know where you might find yourself!

I loved the mission and energy of the organization and the idea of helping create additional opportunities for kids that clearly deserve such opportunity and who can be future leaders.

My experience as a mentor and the relationship with my mentee and his family are extremely meaningful to me.
